November Book Selection
Black Like Me by John Howard Griffin (published in 1961) is a nonfiction account of the author’s journey through the racially segregated American South in 1959. Griffin, a white journalist, temporarily darkened his skin using medication and dye to experience life as a Black man. Traveling through Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia, he encounters racism, discrimination, and hostility firsthand. His observations expose the harsh realities of segregation and prejudice that Black Americans endured daily. The book is both a personal transformation story and a powerful social critique that challenges readers to confront racial injustice and empathy.
