
FIELD TRIPS
UCDA schedules at least three field trips or special programs a year related to significant regional cultural and historic events. Participants carpool and typically stop for lunch before returning home.
Pioneer Hall Museum



In March, 2026 we visited Pioneer Hall, the second Pleasant Hill Academy building to be constructed, was completed in 1889. The bell at the Pioneer Hall Museum in Pleasant Hill is a historic artifact cast by Paul Revere and Sons in 1817. It was purchased in Massachusetts, shipped to TN, and installed in the academy's building's belfry in 1887. Pleasant Hill Academy had a renowned woodcarving program; pictured is one of Tom Brown's carvings depicting Father Dodge and Family coming to Pleasant Hill.
Beth El Center of the Jewish Congregation of Oak Ridge



On March 20, 2025 UCDA members and friends met with Rabbi Ahuvah Lowenthal and president of the congregation, Jim Bogart, to learn abount the history of the synagogue and the Jewish faith. Afterwards they had lunch at the world-famous Big Ed's Pizza.
Coal Creek Miners' Museum



The Coal Creek Miners Museum is dedicated to preserving the rich history of the coal mining industry in the region. Established to honor the miners and their contributions, the museum showcases artifacts, photographs, and personal stories that reflect the daily lives of those who worked in the mines.
Beck Cultural Exchange Center



Several UCDA members traveled to the Beck Cultural Exchange Center in July, 2024. The Center located in Knoxville is both a museum and community center which honors and promotes the African American history and culture of East Tennessee.
